The Open: 16.1

This year the Open means a lot to me. It's my opportunity to see how far I have come. It's also my chance to see how much further I have to go. My husband has always said it will take three years. I think that there are only a few movements that take that long to get. So I have been looking forward to testing and challenging myself and hoping to Rx some of the workouts. Then came 16.1.

16.1 is a triplet (I hate you, Dave Castro) and a 20-minute long AMRAP. It includes overhead lunges, bar facing burpees and chest to bar. When I heard the announcement, I was devastated. Chest to bar. I don't have it. It's a repeat of last year where I struggled for 5 minutes to get pull ups. Except this time, it's 20 minutes.

Here's the workout:
20-min. AMRAP:

RX
25-ft. overhead lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. overhead lunge
8 Chest-to-bar pull-ups
M 95 lb.    W 65 lb.

Scaled
25-ft. front rack walking lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. front rack walking lunge
8 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups

I have no problem with the overhead lunges. I have no problem with the burpees. Could I get my chest to hit that bar was the question? I warmed up, and I went for it. I tried several attempts before to get chest to bar. I didn't get there. I was inches short. I did the lunges no problem (65lbs is heavy, though, don't get me wrong!) and then the burpees. On to chest to bar pull ups. I tried for about 5-7 minutes. I couldn't get a single one.

I did the scaled version. Last year, scaled was pull ups. This year, scaled is JUMPING PULL UPS. It's just too easy. And they took away the overhead movement for scaled and made it a front rack! I am SO bummed to have to complete this workout. I do it fine, 6 rounds plus some. My score is 169. I probably could have gone faster. I didn't do it again. I just took it and hung my head.

They are on upping me every year, and it seems super unfair. I worked hard this past year to get better so I could Rx workouts during the open. Maybe not all, but, at least, some. I don't see the chest to bar as an advanced movement. I mean, we're not talking about muscle ups or anything.

What's curious to me is why they took the scaled down to a more scaled version than last year. It makes me not want to do scaled at all. Maybe that's their goal.

Either way, I am disappointed with myself. Just as I was last year when I couldn't get pull-ups. Bummer, I thought I was there.
