In the end, I did better than I thought.

Saturday was my second CrossFit competition. Battle on Sunset 2. It was local in Antioch and in the end, 7 others from my box had signed up. So there was a good grouping of us. I however, was not ready.

Did I practice my WOD's? Of course. Was I on top of my eating. Not really. Did I drink the night before? A bit. Was I doing extra lifting days each week? No, hadn't really since the first competition.

So I went into this thinking that I would be happy with whatever happened but that I was not prepared. My husband, being the great guy that he is, told me I should be more positive and ready and that I would do fine. I was positive. I mean, I was going to be there, doing my best, which is a lot more than most of the world was doing. But I didn't expect a lot.

Here are the WOD's:

WOD 1

10 Thrusters 55lbs
10 Abmat Situps (touch toes)

5 min. AMRAP

For this WOD I did alright. I managed 4 rounds + 6 reps of the thrusters. I dislike thrusters. One of the great things however is that my husband was there, videoing the entire thing. I got to see how my knees still come in (something I constantly struggle with) and acknowledge it is something I need to work on. I came in 41 out of 46 for this event with 86 (4 + 6).

WOD 2
Power Clean
Athletes will have 4 min to find a 1RM using only the following equipment: Pair of 45's, 35's, 25's, 15's, 10's, 5's and 2.5 lb plates. Barbell is 45lb.

This one was the absolute least of my concerns. Why? In case I haven't mentioned this, I love to lift. My moto is Live Love Lift. I'll be getting a license plate frame soon with this on it. That's how much I love to lift. So I had a plan and with the assistance of my hubby, was able to attack it quite easily. My previous 1 rep max was 105. I nailed 110 at the comp. Hubby got it on video. So awesome. I came in 40th for this WOD.

WOD 3
Chipper: 100 Singles (jump rope) 40 Wall Ball 30 Burpees 20 Ground to OH w/KB 10 Chest to bar pullups (Scaled: kipping, chin ups, band) WB 14: KB 26

This was going to be the toughest one. If you have been following my blog, you know that for the Open my wall ball was terrible and I had a horrible time with it. I kind of moved on and never really worked on it. Bad idea. Now I had to do it in a comp. I practiced before. I got time capped (8 minutes) and stuck on the wall ball. I couldn't get the ball to touch the or get high enough. I tried improving it a couple of ways. One way I thought would work. I practiced by touching my knees to my legs to make sure I was low enough and give myself enough balance to complete the throw overhead. So when it came to this WOD, I blazed through the singles and got to the wall ball. One at a time was all I could do. I let the ball drop and bounce each time. He no rep'ed me several times (I didn't hit the target) but finally, I got through 40. Onto burpees where I made the mistake of not paying attention to the judge. I didn't jump, several times in a row and was no rep'ed. The problem was I didn't hear/see him, so I kept going, not realizing. I did probably 7-8 more than I needed to because of this. I got to the kettle bell. I got in 7 on one side. None on the other. This was further than I came in practice so I was happy. I was sure I would get stuck at the wall ball. But I did not. That was an accomplishment for me. I came in 43rd for this WOD. I did not come in last.

WOD 4 was a floater. You could do it anytime between 9am and 1pm. It was a suicide run with 10 deadlifts at the end. I came in 34th for this one with a time of 00:37.7. I am not super fast at deadlifts. But I was faster than at least 10 people.

My husband took video of ALL the WOD's expect WOD 4, which I did before him and my parents got there. He posted them on facebook. The response was amazing. One of the things I didn't think about is that people generally have no idea what CrossFit actually entails. It's hard as shit. It's sweaty and mind numbing sometimes. It's all those things but it's also the one thing that gives me strength when I don't have strength in myself. It shows me I can do things others cannot do.

It was amazing to be there with my fellow CrossFitters from my box and people from other boxes. It was great to have my parents and my husband there cheering me on, along with my fellow CrossFit friends. And I ended up doing better than I thought I would. Yea, because I accomplished some things I didn't expect, but also because I was there, doing something that not even 5% of the population does. And I was making progress while doing it. That is worth it.
