When do you take breaks?
I have a problem. It's not a bad problem to have but it can be.
When I get really dedicated and into something, I go full force and don't let up. The Open was just announced yesterday and I have been trying hard to get ready for it. But then on Wednesday I nearly had a breakdown during the workout.
Mind you, there are other contributing factors to this minor freak out however I had not been feeling the workouts for the past day or so. I was not nailing my weights like I wanted to, I was feeling tired, etc. Eating was on track so I knew it wasn't that.
My schedule is so set that I know when I can get my workouts in and when I can't. If I can't get one in, I normally just skip that day and then continue on. But if the day I have to take off falls during the week, well, then I end up doing 10 days in a row. Yep, by the time I finished the workout yesterday, I had done 10 days on without rest.
The last 2 days I was tired, irritable, my lifts were shit and my WOD's were longer than normal. On Tuesday during an especially long and horrid workout (20 calorie row, 20 front barbell lunges (50lbs), 20 double unders (60 singles for me), 20 v-ups and 20 goblet squats at 15lbs.) I barely made the time cap of 35:00 minutes. Ugh. I nearly cried during the rowing because I was so frustrated with how slow I was going and how long the entire workout was taking.
At the end of the workout I told my husband I was feeling off. He said, when's the last time you took a rest day? A what? Rest day? Ha. Not me, no way.
I knew I would be taking Saturday off before Sunday's Open workout but that was all I planned. After some discussion the next day at the box, I realized, by not resting, I was not doing myself any favors. In fact, my workouts were struggling because of it.
So I planned a rest day, 2 in a row actually. I haven't taken 2 days off in a row in...well, probably 2 months. In the 59 days that combine January and February, I have been at my box 42 days. That's 17 days off. It actually makes me panic that I took that many days off however 8 of those days are Sundays and 2 of the days are days I have meetings, so that's 10 right there. Not sure where the other 7 come in but you catch my drift.
Today and Saturday I will rest. Sunday, I will be ready for the open.
Now I need to figure out how to factor in a rest day. My decision for March is my rest day will be Saturday, the day before the Open on Sundays. This way I am fresh and ready. After that, I'll figure it out. But at least I am fully aware now of how important rest days are.
